241 monthly visitors to 36,000 — in twelve months.
A career advice platform starting from near-zero organic traffic in a niche dominated by Indeed and LinkedIn.
Career Guidance Co. was a two-year-old career advice and coaching platform with strong editorial content — interview guides, resume templates, career change roadmaps — but almost no organic presence. At the start of the campaign, they were receiving 241 monthly organic visitors despite having over 200 published articles. A content audit confirmed the writing quality was genuinely strong. The problem was a DR of 17 against a competitive landscape anchored by Indeed (DR 91), LinkedIn (DR 98), and Glassdoor (DR 92). Ranking against those domains required a completely different kind of authority — deep topical backlinks from education and career publications that Google associates specifically with employment content.
The strategy was high volume at high relevance. Rather than targeting general DR, we focused exclusively on publications with topical overlap: education media, HR trade press, professional development blogs, and university career centre content. This topical clustering approach — building links from a tight cluster of relevant domains — is consistently more effective than diffuse high-DR links for new domains entering competitive verticals. We set a 12-month goal of 500+ placements from topically relevant domains.
How we built it
Education & HR guest post campaign
We placed 280 guest articles on education, HR, and professional development sites over twelve months. Each article was written by Dot Mirror's content team and reviewed by Career Guidance Co. before pitching. Publication targets included EdSurge, HR Technologist, Training Journal, and 40+ university alumni blogs and career services publications.
Link inserts in career content
We identified 900+ existing articles ranking for 'best resume templates,' 'how to change careers,' 'interview tips,' and similar high-volume career queries. From that pool, we secured 271 link inserts on pages with genuine organic traffic. Career Guidance Co.'s relevant tool pages and guide content were inserted as natural recommendations within existing trusted content.
Long-tail keyword anchor targeting
Because Career Guidance Co.'s strongest pages were long-form guides, we built an anchor text strategy specifically targeting the long-tail terms where they could rank quickly: 'career change at 30,' 'how to write a resume with no experience,' 'entry-level interview questions.' These converted into top-five positions within 60–90 days of their first links going live.
Publications & placements
From invisible to 36,000 monthly visitors — and still climbing.
The results accelerated sharply from month seven onwards as topical authority compounded. By month twelve, organic traffic had grown from 241 to 36,000 monthly visitors — a 14,582% increase. The domain's DR moved from 17 to 44. Forty-three target pages reached the top ten for their primary keyword. Career Guidance Co. closed a Series A round three months after the campaign ended, with organic search cited explicitly in investor materials as a primary growth channel.
“We'd tried link building before with two other agencies and got nothing. Dot Mirror was the first team that actually understood which publications mattered in our space. The traffic numbers were genuinely shocking — our board still asks how we did it.”
