History of Indian Newspaper

The history of Indian Newspaper starts from the 17th century – when the British were in charge of governing the Indian Subcontinent. If we look into exact information then I’d say it was 1780 when the print media started its journey in India.

The first printed Indian newspaper was the Hicky’s Bengal Gazette under the British Raj. After that, a lot of print newspapers took an entry. Some of them are The Indian Gazette, The Madras Courier, The Calcutta Gazette, The Bombay Herald, and many more.

Udant Martand was the first Hindi language newspaper printed in 1826. After the partition back in 1947, a lot of new newspapers started printing and getting in the hand of general people.

In the year 2007, India surpassed over 100 million newspaper copies circulated for the general people.
